Day 40: Brisbane to Hervey Bay

Before leaving Brisbane we had one more stop to make, the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. I have honestly never seen Em so excited as when she found out we could opt to hold a koala... So, the keen beans that we are, we got there almost at opening time to beat the queues.

They are so soft! And cute and adorable, clinging to you like a little bubba! Ours was called Minty, a 6 year old girl. Apparently they live about 16 years and can only be held for up to half an hour a day so are on a swift rotation. I was worried that there was something a little cruel about it all, but they seemed happy enough and the carers were clearly exceptionally experienced and passionate about their well being, which made us feel better. That, and their ickle furry faces! Gah, so cute.

Other than koalas, there were wombats, Tasmanian devils, lizards, a platypus, wallabies and we also got to go into the kangaroo and emu enclosures to get up close to Australia's most famous residents. So many kangaroos just hopping by, eating from people's hands and posing for snaps with their little joeys in their pouches!

After the sanctuary we jumped back in the car and somehow managed to get out of Brisbane heading for the Sunshine Coast! We passed through Maryborough, a small town with seemingly not too much going on but it was the birthplace of Mary Poppins writer, PL Travers - my geek side took over only momentarily when I found this out...

Hervey Bay is essentially the gateway to Fraser Island so there isn't loads to do other than a lot of big ikea looking shops and a long coastline. We headed for the main esplanade to take in the sunset by the coast and just in the distance we could see Fraser ready and waiting for us. A hell of a lot more exciting than the hideously awful game of pool that we played in the meantime...
