This morning we hiked through the Poroari River Gorge at Punakaiki, a valley lined by huge limestone cliffs and surrounded by the subtropical forest of the Paparoa National Park. The walk was stunning, walking low alongside the river then up a steep incline into the forest where I have never seen so many ferns... We also got to see (and smell) some wild goats! At first we weren't going to do the walk as we'd been warned the path was supposed to be closed but no signs when we got there meant we went for it anyway. At the end of the walk there was along bridge and at the end of that there was a closed sign into the park... Turns out we weren't supposed to have walked it after all... Oops.
After our walk we had a long drive to the famous Franz Josef glacier where we are keeping fingers crossed for a clear day so we can go up there tomorrow for a helicopter flight and hike on the ice itself!
